Tips for Job Seekers

Revamp Your Resume And Attract Employers

First start by sending our your resume to potential employers.  Ensure that you spend time reviewing,  updating and correcting spelling and grammatical errors.  If you are getting out of high school or college—you may have some work to do.  Most teenagers and young adults tell me that they have no resume because they have had what they consider to be a lousy job at a fast food store or supermarket and they didn’t think it counted.

On the contrary, it does count.  If you have been employed (regardless of the job), you should know that employers feel comfortable knowing that you have had some exposure to a work environment.  When you prepare your resume, do reflect on your past experience (regardless of how insignificant you think it is), and identify areas where you have had experience in the functions listed below.  Add the relevant ones to your resume and combine them with actual experience and achievements .

Try to identify areas where you have contributed, led, participated or supported work in any of the following areas.  Ensure that you include these in your resume.  Even if you are a teenager or young adult with little experence, you should include all the functions you performed.  Try to think back to when you performed functions that may mirror any of the ones below.  Here are a few examples:

  • Trained co-worker(s)
  • Improved a work process
  • Performed customer service
  • Provided technical support
  • Participated in team efforts or demonstrated teamwork
  • Participated in organizational activities (within and outside the company)
  • Volunteered your services
  • Demonstrated diversity
  • Motivated or inspired others
  • Developed relationships on behalf of the company
  • Established a business
  • Managed a project, operation or department

If you have only been employed for 5 years or less, all you need is one page of information .  For those of you who are returning to the workforce after being unemployed for an extensive period, take the time to review you resume, make changes and if necessary reduce it to 1-2 pages focusing on the the last 5-10 years of your career.  You may do this by combining job functions where possible.  Focus on achievements and less on job functions.  Check our blogs for information on creative ways to showcase your skills.

Also, for a list of companies that are hiring,  look at the Job Seeker information on the Who Is Hiring page.

For other than traditional jobs, take a look at the Work From Home opportunities on the Who Is Hiring page.

Respond To And Connect With Employers

Keep in touch with all potential employers and business contacts.  Ensure that you respond to requests for interviews or post-interview follow up requests.  Keep a folder on your computer with a variety of letter styles.  Many of these can be found on the internet, but Microsoft also carries a number of free letters in its Word Template folder.  These letters include design styles for Application, Hiring, Interview, Job Offer and  Thank you.  For the the self employed, there are a number of templates for Contracts, Business Plans, Reports and Job descriptions.  Tweak them to suit your needs and save drafts in a special folder on your desktop.  If you are going through multiple interviews, we suggest you use the form we provided to keep track of your contacts.  Click on the forms tab below and save the Job Search form to your  desktop.

Be open to non-traditional jobs.

If you are currently looking for a job and have been for a while, you know that  finding a job is no easy task.  Even highly qualified persons cannot find jobs in their career field and are struggling to get into jobs that they may have traditionally found to be beneath them.  One journalist told her story on the public channel about being laid off and having to take a job as a security guard.   You need to think outside the box and explore all types of job opportunities - those that are traditionally gender based and the variety of creative ones found on the internet.  The Internet Marketing Center (IMC)  has great programs for training and developing your skills in Affiliate Marketing and learning about eCommerce.  Get to know more by reading our blog at http://gettinghiredstayinghired.blogspot.com/

Get Creative.

There are a number of great business opportunities waiting for your creative skills.  If finding a traditional job is proving frustrating, expand your creative skills on the internet.  Here are some interesting areas you can explore while you search:  Upgrade your skills and education by taking internet courses.  Try http://www.lynda.com for relatively inexpensive courses.  Write a Blog, create an Ebook, sell products on Ebay,  apply for Work from Home jobs, apply for Survey assignments, advertise your skills on - Elance, Odesk, VWorker, Guru and Craigslist.  You may consider expanding your academic skills by taking courses at campus based or online universities.   Kaplan University, University of Phoenix, Capella and several other schools offer a variety of online classes that can boost your education, skills and marketability while your wait.  You can check their accreditation by accessing the U.S. Department of Education database at http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/
